A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.
Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.
Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.
Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.
Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.
In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.
Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.
Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.
A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.
The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.
“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
