The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
