We present a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like typical body horror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.
The plot begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.
